The purpose of endodontic retreatment is to create the conditions for complete healing and long-term preservation of a tooth. Complete cleaning and disinfection of the canal system promotes remission of clinical symptoms and healing of periapical inflammatory reactions. In some cases, timely retreatment can prevent the development of a secondary infectious disease.
Sometimes the infection persists even after root canal therapy. In these cases, an apicoectomy, or root end resection can be performed to remove diseased tissue.
