Yellow teeth? Main causes and how to avoid them.

Having white teeth has become a necessity not only aesthetically, but also psychologically, but not all people have white teeth naturally and not always the yellowish tone they may acquire is due to tobacco or coffee, some factors may not necessarily be caused by food or habits, for example:

1.- The color of the teeth simply depends on and varies in each individual.

There is an important genetic conditioning factor that defines the color of our teeth from the moment we are born.

Congenital diseases such as dentinogenesis, amelogenesis imperfecta or enamel hypoplasia cause defects in the enamel or dentin, causing them to have shades ranging from a dense white, yellowish or even brownish color.

4.- Endocrine alterations of thyroid hormones also influence the color of the teeth and can cause stains and alter their color.

As for foods or products that stain teeth:

1.- Coffee, black tea, red wine or cola soft drinks are the worst enemies.

2.- In some places, water can also stain the teeth in different tones, because it contains high amounts of fluoride, the excess of this substance causes a condition known as fluorosis, which is distinguished by stains on the teeth in yellowish and brownish tones.

3.- Some types of antibiotics, such as tetracycline, can cause an alteration during tooth formation, causing the tooth to form a brown striated color.

Mouthwashes, the component called chlorhexidine, an antiseptic substance in some mouthwashes, can produce a coloration in the teeth if used for a prolonged period of time. Its use is indicated to treat gingivitis, as well as other periodontal diseases, therefore the indications of your dentist should always be followed so as not to cause an alteration in the tone of the teeth.

5. Tartar deposited between the teeth and gums caused by poor hygiene gives a yellowish appearance to the smile in general, a routine or deep cleaning helps with this problem.

Another factor, no less important, is the passage of time, as we age our teeth naturally turn yellow. It is completely normal for teeth to change shade with age, because from the time we are born until we die we subject them to a series of conditioning factors that cause changes in them. But it is also fundamental how we take care of our teeth so that they remain in the lightest possible shade; above all, how we clean them.

How do we take care of them?

We cannot slow down the passage of time, but we can take care in cleaning our teeth, as well as avoiding excessive consumption of the aforementioned foods and beverages and, of course, tobacco.

A deep cleaning and polishing of the enamel professionally performed every 6 months helps to delay the particles that stain the enamel from sticking to the teeth, besides removing the tartar (yellowish color) that cannot be removed with your routine hygiene.

There are several options of effective whitening treatments, the best thing to do is to go to the dentist and have him/her diagnose the ideal one for your needs or conditions and above all, that you are apt to receive it, since some people are not, and above all, to rule out any previous pathology.
