The placement of computer guided implants is one of the high-tech methods widely used in Makeover Dental Studio for more than 10 years by Dr. Rafael Cortes Alvarez. This method increases the quality of surgeries and helps us to make a previous planning, thus becoming the tool of excellence in implant surgery cases, as it provides accurate results, safer and with almost no post-surgical discomfort, due to its high technology is a minimally invasive procedure. However, not all patients can be operated by this technique, we will tell you more about it…
What does the placement of computer-guided implants consist of?
Dental implants are artificial substitutes for the roots of lost natural teeth, 100% biocompatible. These are complemented with two pieces; one is the post that is screwed to the implant and the other is the prosthesis called crown which can be cemented or screwed together with the post. With these we can replace a single tooth, several teeth or even a complete jawbone.

Although there are conventional methods for the placement of implants, in which the patient must visit the dentist several times to carry out the treatment that includes a surgery in which the gum is opened, today there is a much more precise and modern method that uses CAD/CAM technology, which stands for “computer-aided design and manufacturing”.

The Swedish company Nobel Biocare developed a software called “Nobel Guide” whose technology was introduced in the United States in 2005 and in that same year began to take hold in Baja California, in response to the need to be at the forefront.
The software consists of converting a computerized tomography of the patient into an interactive 3D image, in which the implantology specialist can evaluate the bone morphology of the person, taking into account such important details for choosing the right implant as: bone density levels, bone defects (porosity), height and width, as well as the location of an important nerve in the lower jaw or paranasal sinuses in the upper jaw that may cross and/or interfere with the desired area for the future implant. The virtual surgery is performed on the computer based on an ideal diagnosis that will provide maximum functionality, esthetics and comfort.

Once the virtual surgery is finished, the information is sent via internet to Sweden where an acrylic surgical template is manufactured by means of a computerized milling machine. This template has metallic guides that direct the placement of the implants once it is seated in the patient’s gum, so there is no need to open it with a scalpel and therefore: no sutures are needed.

It is a type of surgery that although it has been performed for several years, it requires extensive experience and knowledge in implant dentistry.
Tijuana currently has specialized tomographs that place the entity at the forefront to perform these procedures and in Makeover Dental Studio we have the Nobel Guide software for patient comfort and practicality in planning.
This technique has exceptional advantages such as; simplified surgery that shortens the time of the same, better healing of tissues, in some cases placement of an immediate prosthesis the day of surgery, less post-operative discomfort, inflammation and almost no surgical risks.
Advantages of computer-guided implants compared to the conventional technique:
- Precision: it is very important in any dental intervention, since one works in a very reduced and delicate space, and in implant surgery thoroughness is crucial.
- Minimally invasive surgery: The placement of the implants is carried out through a single hole through which we introduce the dental implant. There is no need to open the gum and, therefore, it does not cause inflammation. Stitches are not necessary either.
- Considerable reduction of surgery time.
- Better and faster healing.
However, knowing that this is the ideal procedure for the placement of dental implants we must remember that this technique is not suitable for all cases, because when we find ourselves with thin jaws, with little bone or large defects by previous extractions we have to opt for open flap surgery to place implants and at the same time graft bone or bone reconstruction prior to the implants that allows us to anchor these in the future safely.
