Sterilization and Safety

Sterilization & Safety

The question every patient wants to ask and most do not. It deserves a specific answer rather than reassurance.

How an instrument gets back to you

Cleaned before it is sterilized

Debris is removed first and then ultrasonically, because sterilization does not penetrate what has been left behind on a surface.

Pouched, sterilized, sealed

Instruments are sealed before the autoclave cycle and stay sealed until the moment of use. The pouch is opened in front of you, not beforehand.

Verified, not assumed

Each pouch carries an indicator that responds to the conditions inside the chamber, and the autoclave itself is tested periodically and the results recorded.

Opened in front of you

The pouch is opened at the chair at the moment of use, not beforehand.

Single-use, always discarded

Reprocessed under the protocol above

What you can ask to see

The sterilization area at Makeover Dental Studio is not a back room that patients are kept away from. The protocol is written, the autoclave testing records exist, and both can be shown on request. A practice that treats those questions as an insult is answering them anyway.

How do I know instruments have actually been sterilized?

By looking at the pouch. Every instrument arrives sealed, and the pouch carries an indicator that changes color only when the temperature, pressure and time inside the autoclave were genuinely reached — not merely when the machine was switched on. It is opened in front of you at the start of your appointment. If instruments are already laid out on a tray unwrapped when you sit down, you have no way of knowing what happened to them, and that is worth noticing in any practice, in any country.

I am crossing from San Diego. Is dental treatment in Mexico safe?

The question is answerable, but the country is the wrong unit to answer it in. There are excellent practices and poor ones on both sides of that border, and nationality tells you nothing about either. What tells you something is specific: who is treating you and what they are trained in, whether the instruments arrive sealed, whether the sterilization protocol is written down, whether the autoclave is tested and the results kept, and whether anyone becomes uncomfortable when you ask. Those are the questions worth taking to any practice you are considering, including this one.

Frequently asked

What about the water used during treatment?

Dental units have their own water lines, and those lines require their own maintenance protocol rather than being assumed clean because the supply is. Treating them as part of the infection control routine is standard practice where infection control is taken seriously.

Yes. It is a reasonable request and it is the most direct way to answer the question for yourself, particularly if you are traveling for treatment and want to see the practice before committing to a plan.

Needles, blades, gloves, suction tips and a range of other items are discarded after one use and never reprocessed. Metal instruments are designed to be sterilized repeatedly and are, following the full sequence each time.

If safety is the concern that has held you back, say so directly when you write. It is a fair question, it has specific answers, and asking it in advance is easier than wondering about it in the chair.

Dental sterilization autoclave, Tijuana

Sterile pouch opened in front of patient, Tijuana

    Opened in front of you

Every instrument that touches your mouth comes out of a sealed pouch that is opened in front of you, at the chair. The strip on the pouch changes colour only after a completed sterilisation cycle, so what you are looking at is the proof, not a promise. If a pouch is damaged or the indicator has not changed, it goes back and a new one is opened.

    Set up while you watch

The tray is prepared at the chair, not brought in ready. Pouches stay sealed until the moment they are needed, and the indicator strip on each one is visible before it is opened. Nothing about this is meant to be impressive; it is simply what a protocol looks like when it is followed rather than described.
