A smile design starts with photographs of you smiling, not with a shade guide. Tooth proportion, the midline, the curve of the smile against the lower lip and how much tooth shows at rest are what decide whether a result reads as natural or as dental work.
That plan is built digitally and then tested in your mouth as a trial, before anything is prepared. You see it on your own face, in your own light, with your own lip line, which is the only place the decision can honestly be made.
Smile design is a plan rather than a procedure. It may resolve into whitening and two composites, or into orthodontics followed by porcelain on a handful of teeth. The design comes first and the treatment list follows from it, not the other way around.

Tested before it is definitive
Restorations are tried in before anything is bonded or cemented. That session is where you see the smile in your own mouth while it can still change: appearance, speech and bite are checked together, and it is adjusted until it is right.
What gets measured
- Intraoral digital scanning — a 3D replica of your teeth, with no impression trays.
- 3D facial scanning — your features and your expressions, not only the teeth.
- Radiographs and computed tomography — the bone underneath.
- exocad — all of it is brought into a single file, where the doctors and the laboratory’s 3D smile design technician work the case together.
From that come the shape, texture, size and shade, decided on what your face and your bite allow.
Is smile design a treatment?
It is the plan that decides the treatments. It can end in whitening and bonding, in veneers, in orthodontics, or in a combination, and the plan is what tells you which.
Can I see the result before agreeing?
That is the purpose of the trial stage. The proposed design is placed in your mouth and photographed on your face before any tooth is prepared.
