Sedation Dentistry Options
Fear should never be the reason a mouth goes untreated.
Some patients have put off care for years — not because they doubt the dentistry, but because of how the chair makes them feel. Sedation dentistry exists for exactly that, and for the longer surgical sessions where comfort makes the work safer and calmer for everyone.
Every procedure here starts with effective local anesthesia, and sedation options are available for patients and procedures that call for them. Which option fits your case — and your health history — is decided with the doctor at your evaluation, not from a menu.
Cases here are planned by Dr. Rafael Cortés Álvarez, Director of Makeover Dental Studio.
Dra. Lila Desiree Angeles Rodríguez — Anesthesiology
Sedation here is given by a medical anesthesiologist, not by the dentist who is performing the treatment.
Dra. Lila Desiree Angeles Rodríguez holds a medical degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, completed her clinical internship at Hospital General Regional No. 20 (IMSS) and her residency in anesthesiology, and is certified by the Consejo Nacional de Certificación en Anestesiología. Cédula profesional 10928884 · cédula de especialidad 411710.
Her training is in what happens when something goes wrong: airway management, rapid-response protocols, and holding your circulation steady through the procedure. That is the reason she is in the room. She monitors you before, during and after, and she has nothing else to do while the dentist works.
How comfort is planned
Your history first
Medical history, medication and previous experiences with anesthesia are reviewed before any sedation is proposed. What is safe for one patient is not automatically right for another.
The option matched to the procedure
A short filling and a full-arch surgery do not call for the same level of support. The sedation plan is sized to the procedure and to how you want to experience it.
Monitored, and with a companion plan
Sedated patients are monitored throughout, and you leave with clear instructions — including when someone else should drive and how the rest of your day should look.
Will I feel pain during treatment?
No. Local anesthesia keeps the procedure itself painless; sedation addresses the anxiety and the length of the appointment, not just the sensation. Most patients are surprised by how uneventful the experience turns out to be.
Is sedation safe for me?
That is a question your medical history answers, and it is taken seriously here: conditions, medications and airway considerations are reviewed by the anesthesiologist before anything is offered. If sedation is not advisable in your case, you will be told, along with what can be done instead.
What patients say

Frequently asked
What patients ask before they book. If yours is not here, the fastest answer is a call.
- Your case planned in 3D before treatment begins
- A treatment plan written in English
- A direct line to the clinic once you are home
The right way to answer that is at your evaluation, against your health history and your procedure. Every case starts with effective local anesthesia, and the sedation plan is built from there with the doctor.
That depends on the level of sedation used. Many patients under deeper relaxation recall very little of the appointment; with lighter options you are calm but aware. Your preference is part of the plan.
With local anesthesia alone, yes. If sedation was used, plan for someone else to drive: a responsible adult has to drive you home or stay with you afterwards. The sedation used is light and wears off relatively quickly, but you still leave accompanied — it is part of the written instructions you take home.
With a conversation and a scan, nothing else. Your first visit is diagnostic; nothing happens in that chair that you have not agreed to first.
The technique used here is light conscious sedation. You stay awake, responsive and able to talk to the doctor throughout; what it takes away is the anxiety, not the awareness. Most patients describe the appointment as feeling shorter than it was.
Pre-operative work usually includes a complete blood count, blood glucose and coagulation tests (PT/PTT). Depending on your history or the complexity of the implant case, a recent CT scan of the jaw or a clearance letter from your physician may also be asked for. Which of those apply is decided at your evaluation.
Either. You can have the lab work and imaging done at your own clinic in the United States and bring the results to the evaluation, or we can run and coordinate them here in Tijuana during your first visit.
It depends on which tests your history calls for. Done through our network in Tijuana they cost less than the same panel in the United States. Either way you receive an itemized estimate at the consultation, before anything is ordered.
Often it is the reason to use it. Anxiety raises blood pressure and stress during the appointment, and keeping you relaxed helps hold vital signs steady. Your health history is reviewed first by the anesthesiologist and the protocol is built around it — if sedation is not advisable in your case, you will be told.
