Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)

What PRF actually is

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is not a product ordered from a supplier. It is made from your own blood, in the room, during your own appointment.

A small sample is drawn at the start of the procedure and spun in a Choukroun PRF centrifuge, on the low-speed protocols Dr. Joseph Choukroun defined, so the cells separate without being broken. The fraction that is kept — platelets and fibrin — is prepared with no additives: no chemicals, no anticoagulants, nothing from anyone else. What goes back into the surgical site is your own blood, concentrated.

Placed during that same procedure, it forms a fibrin matrix over the site. The matrix holds the clot where it belongs and keeps your own growth factors concentrated in the tissue that has to heal, which supports the soft tissue as it closes. Because the material came from you, there is nothing to reject and nothing that can be transmitted from a donor.

For a patient driving home after surgery, the part that tends to matter is the recovery: less swelling and less discomfort in the days afterwards, a lower rate of infection, and a more orderly heal. What it does not do is replace a graft, or make bone appear faster than the site can build it. It is used here as a complement, never a standalone treatment — alongside a graft, a sinus lift, an extraction or the placement of an implant, and only where the case calls for it.

Your own blood, same appointment

The sample is drawn from you and returned to you within the same visit. Nothing is stored, nothing is pooled with anyone else’s and nothing comes from a donor.

A fibrin matrix over the site

The fibrin holds the clot in place and keeps your own growth factors where the healing has to happen, supporting the soft tissue while it closes.

A complement, not a treatment apart

PRF accompanies a graft, a sinus lift, an extraction or an implant. It is not offered as a procedure of its own, and it is not a condition of treatment.

What comes out of the sample

Three formats come out of the same draw. Which one is used, and whether more than one is, depends on the site.

A fibrin membrane

A soft sheet of your own fibrin, placed over a graft or a surgical wound as a cover while the gum closes over it.

A liquid concentrate

Mixed with graft particles, it binds them into a single mass that stays where it is placed — the term used in surgery is sticky bone. It is easier to shape and it migrates less.

Growth factors released over days

The fibrin holds your own growth factors in a mesh and lets them out gradually over the days after surgery, rather than all at once in the first hours.

Who handles the biological side

Dr. Rafael Cortés Álvarez, Director of Makeover Dental Studio, is a pioneer of guided implant surgery in Baja: in 2006 he placed the region’s first All-on-6 case using NobelGuide 3D technology, and he has worked with Nobel Biocare for the nineteen uninterrupted years since. He graduated from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California and holds a diploma from Loma Linda University. His work carries the imprint of two lineages: the direct mentorship of Professor Dr. Alan Kleiman, a pioneer in modern implant research, and the advanced protocols of Dr. Sascha Jovanovic’s continuing-education system, which he keeps refining alongside faculty from the world’s leading implant programs. That is what mentorship passes down, case by case — and it is the method behind the plan presented to you. Cédula profesional 5933630.

PRF uses your own blood to support healing, and it sits alongside the grafting and regeneration protocols in the same surgical plan rather than as a treatment of its own.

Platelet-Rich Fibrin

A concentrate prepared from a small sample of your own blood, drawn at the appointment and separated so that the platelet and fibrin fraction is kept. It is placed into the surgical site during the same procedure, as an adjunct to grafting and implant surgery rather than as a treatment of its own.

How it fits into an appointment

A sample is drawn

A small amount of blood is taken at the start of the appointment, in the same way it would be for a routine blood test.

It is separated

The sample is spun so that the platelet and fibrin fraction can be separated from the rest of it.

It is prepared for the site

The concentrate is shaped for wherever it is going — an extraction socket, a graft, alongside a membrane.

It is placed

It goes into the surgical site during the same procedure. Nothing is stored, and nothing comes from anybody else.

Alongside bone grafting

Where bone has to be rebuilt before an implant can be placed, PRF is used as part of the same surgical appointment.

Alongside a sinus lift

In the upper jaw, where the floor of the sinus has to be raised to make room for an implant.

With extractions and implant placement

In the socket left by an extraction, or at the moment an implant is placed, where the surgical plan calls for it.

True of PRF anywhere it is used

What it does not do

When it is decided

PRF is planned at the same time as the surgery it accompanies, once the tomography has been read and the site is understood. It is written into the plan with everything else, phase by phase and in writing, rather than added to it afterwards.

Worth asking in the consultation

Four questions that tell you whether it is being used for a reason or offered as an extra.

Frequently asked

Is PRF the same thing as PRP?

They are related and they are routinely confused. Both are prepared from your own blood, and they differ in how the sample is processed and in what is kept from it. Which one applies, if either does, belongs in the surgical plan rather than on a menu.

The sample is drawn from you and returned to you within the same appointment. It is not stored, not pooled with anyone else’s and not sourced from a donor. The draw itself is the same as a routine blood test.

The draw is a single prick, the same routine blood sample taken for any lab test, and most patients barely feel it. The surgery it accompanies is carried out under anesthetic in the usual way, and PRF does not add a second procedure to sit through.

Yes. PRF is an adjunct used where the site calls for it, not a requirement and not a condition of treatment.

It is recommended more often where healing is likely to be slower: in patients with diabetes, with slow clotting times, with osteoporosis or a degenerative condition, or where the case would simply benefit from supporting how the site heals. Whether it applies to you is a question the surgical plan answers, after imaging.

What it costs

PRF (platelet-rich fibrin)$100 – $200

PRF therapy runs from $100 to $200 USD depending on the case, added to your treatment plan when it is indicated. It is not a separate treatment, and it is not charged unless it forms part of your surgical plan. Prices in USD. Every plan is confirmed after imaging and clinical evaluation; the written estimate you receive before treatment is the one that applies.

The answer starts with your scan, not with a plan someone already made.

Whether you need this procedure at all is a question imaging answers, and the reasoning behind it should be visible to you. If a shorter route exists in your case, that is the one you will hear about.

If a graft, a sinus lift or an implant has been proposed to you, the useful question is what the site itself actually needs. A consultation is where that gets measured rather than assumed.
